Structure
| The bond that is formed in this reaction is
called an amide bond or amide linkage. In some special
cases it can also be called a peptide bond or peptide linkage. We will deal with these
special cases later. You should be able to recognize the formula of an amide by the
presence of the amide bond. |
|
| When you see this functional group, the amide
group, you know that you have an amide. Look for carbon double-bonded to an
oxygen and single-bonded to a nitrogen. The carbon is also bonded to an alkyl group. The
nitrogen is bonded to two other things, perhaps hydrogen, perhaps alkyl groups. |
