CH 106 - Lesson 5
Nitro-Organic Compounds
Amines, Amides, Amino Acids
Introduction
Primarily, this lesson deals with some of the organic compounds that contain nitrogen.
Among other things, you will need to be able to recognize amines, amides,
and amino acids from their structural formulas. You will also need to be
able to name them and draw their structural formulas,
and also be familiar with some of their physical and chemical properties.
Because nitrogen is found in several important heterocyclic and polycyclic
compounds, we will take a quick look at those as well.
A significant portion of your lab work for this lesson will involve identifying
the class of several unknown organic compounds. You will use both infrared spectra
and lab tests to accomplish this.
