Reactions

Alkanes are fairly stable compounds. As evidence of the stability of these compounds consider that the very long chained alkanes are the constituents of oil, and oil has existed for quite a long time in underground deposits that are now being tapped to serve as fuel for us. Compared to the other organic compounds that we will study later, alkanes do not react much. However, there are three important types of reactions for them -- combustion, pyrolysis, and substitution.
