Physical Properties
Because alkyl halides contain halogen atoms, they have slightly polar molecules (unless symmetry cancels the polarity, as in CCl4) with dipole-dipole intermolecular bonding. They are not polar enough, however, to dissolve in water and they will dissolve in nonpolar chemicals like the alkanes. The higher weight and slight polarity caused by the halogen atoms make alkyl halides have higher melting and boiling points than alkanes with the same number of carbon atoms.
