Nomenclature
Alkyl halides can be viewed either as alkyl groups attached halogen atoms or as halogen atoms (halo-groups) attached to alkane molecules. Either view can be used to name alkyl halides. The view that they are alkyl groups attached to halogen atoms results in common names such as methyl chloride. The view that they are halogen atoms attached to alkane molecules results in IUPAC names like chloromethane.
