Nomenclature

The word alkane is a general name for a whole class of compounds. In naming organic compounds, you will find that every part of the name means something. In the case of the alkanes, the alk- represents the presence of hydrogen and carbon in the compound and -ane represents the presence of only single bonds. There are no double or triple bonds in alkanes.

In the pages of this section we will first deal with very simple cases and then look at the complicating factors that require more complex names. As you go through this, keep in mind that everything you learn here serves as a foundation to which more will be added as the course continues.
