IUPAC Names

The IUPAC method for naming alkyl halides uses the same approach as we used to name the alkanes.

First select the longest carbon chain and name it as an alkane.
Then, number the carbon atoms in the direction that puts the #1 carbon atom at the end of the chain closest to an attached side group (halogen atom or alkyl group).
Next, identify and name all of the alkyl groups and halogen atoms attached to that chain.
These are written as prefixes in alphabetical order in front of the alkane name and a number is placed in front of each prefix to show where it is attached to the chain. It used to be that the prefixes could be placed in order of increasing size and complexity but now the order should be alphabetically. When named in this way, the halogen atoms are referred to as fluoro-, chloro-, bromo- or iodo- groups.

Let's go through the process in both directions, first from formula to name and then name to formula.
