Formulas

Molecules can be represented by a variety of formulas and diagrams. One particularly important tool for the study of organic chemistry is the use of structural formulas. The primary value of structural formulas is that, unlike molecular formulas, they show how the individual atoms are bonded to one another within molecules. In the pages of this section we will look at variations of structural formulas and their relationship to other molecular representations, such as molecular formulas and electron dot diagrams (Lewis structures).
