| As mentioned earlier, the IUPAC method is not the only method used to name
alkyl halides. Sometimes, for the simple alkyl halides where structural isomerism is not
really a problem, common names are used. Generally, the basic IUPAC approach is reversed.
Instead of viewing these compounds as having halogen atoms attached to carbon chains, they
can be viewed as alkyl groups attached to halogen atoms. Thus, the names methyl bromide
and ethyl iodide. Sometimes the prefix method is used as when CCl4 is
called carbon tetrachloride. |
