CommentsWe have spent a long time and many pages dealing with naming one very simple group of organic compounds, the alkanes. The reason for this is that naming alkanes is the basis for naming most of the other organic chemicals that you will deal with. The same names will appear over and over again with new endings and prefixes to represent new types of compounds. But the method that you have used to name alkanes is essentially the same method that you will use to name most of the compounds that you will deal with in this course. At this point you will have to decide how much practice you need in order to master the naming of alkanes, as well as determining their structural formulas from their names. Review the examples in the workbook and work on the ones given in your textbook. If you need more examples to practice with, ask the instructor for some more.
