Fourth Example

Calcium and Nitrogen

Calcium is in Group II-A. It loses two electrons and forms a +2 ion called an calcium ion. Nitrogen, of course, takes on a -3 charge to form a nitride ion. The charge ratio is 2:3 therefore the atom ratio will be 3:2. Since three calcium ions each with +2 charge will neutralize the charge on two nitride ions with -3 charge, the formula will be Ca3N2. The name is calcium nitride because it is made from calcium ions and nitride ions.
Ions Ca2+ N3-
Charge ratio 2 3
Ion ratio 3 2
Formula Ca3N2
Name calcium nitride
