Computer, E-mail and Internet Requirements for Online Courses |
General Information about Online Classes | Create Blackboard Account
To participate in an online course, students must have an e-mail account and have access to a computer and the Internet.
Computer Specifications
A PC running Windows 98 Second Edition or Higher or a Macintosh running OS 9 or higher
128 Mb RAM (256 Mb highly recommended) and at least 50 Mb of available disk space for assignments
A modem or other device capable of connecting to the internet at a speed of at least 56 kbps or better
Internet/Browser Specifications
An Internet Service Provider (high-speed internet connection is recommended)
An internet browser installed on your computer. The following browsers are supported by the Blackboard software we use to deliver online courses:
Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6.0
Netscape 6.2, 7.0, 7.1 and 8.0
AOL 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0*
Firefox
Browser Notes:
It is recommended that you do not use AOL's browser.
If you are using AOL as your ISP, it is suggested that once you are connected to
the internet that you minimize your AOL browser and then open a different, more
compatible browser, such as Internet Explorer.
Blackboard Users: If you are running Internet Explorer-7 / VISTA and are having trouble posting to the Blackboard Discussion Board or can't answer essay or exam questions in Blackboard, take the following steps to fix the problem:
Logon to Blackboard
On your "Welcome" page, on the left side, is the box labeled "Tools."
Click on "Personal Information."
Click on "Set Visual Text Box Editor Options."
Under "Manage Visual Text Box Editor," click "Unavailable."
Click "Submit."
Click "OK."
Other Requirements
An email account is mandatory
Word processing software program (Word is recommended)
Sound card and speakers for some courses
Current, up to date virus software
Some classes may have specific class requirements for additional software
Note: Students are responsible for their own software and equipment maintenance and setup.
